Life in the time of COVID-19: Space Cats

Artist Claire Wrazin in front of her mural “Life in the time of Covid-19: Space Cats”

Location: 31 E. Main Street, Springville (visible from the Municipal Parking lot located behind Main Street)

At first glance, an ethereal space scene

Looking closer, a series of cats, separated and distant.

The COVID-19 pandemic presented challenges to the Springville community in a variety of ways. Springville Center for the Arts sought to reflect on the experience by commissioning this mural with financial support from the Springville-Griffith Community Education Foundation as part of an expanding public art program.

The artist, Claire Wrazin, collected feedback from community members and crafted a design which reflects the sense of isolation many felt during the height of the pandemic but also the things in our lives we came to better appreciate as a result of the shutdown.

Claire was the visual arts intern in 2019. She installed many public art projects during her internship. A student at Empire College majoring in Communication Design, she joined staff when her internship concluded. She has helped develop and facilitate our SPARK preschool program, after-school SPARK for grades K-5, Visual Arts Intern Coordinator for 2020, day programs for grades K-8, as well as multiple artistic adventures at SCA and Arts Café. She also designed and installed a series of mini-murals at the Concord Public Library.

She had help from many volunteers and from our 2020 Visual Arts Intern Claire Hemingway.
