Batik Work by Meagan McCrory
On Display in the Harold L. Olmstead Gallery September 14 through November 4
“My goal as an artist is to capture the eye with vibrant color and subjects that are easily overlooked, while maintaining the simplicity of the created piece. My art reflects my heart and the heart of my Creator.” -Meagan McCrory
Of all the creative expressions Meagan experimented with, she has found batik to be the most satisfying. “There is a journey to every piece.” She explains. Layer by layer her pieces take on life.
To begin the process, melted wax is applied to the areas of a white cloth that are to remain white. The fabric is then dyed with the palest color that is to be used. After the cloth has dried, melted wax is applied to the areas that are to remain the dyed color and then it is dyed the next darker shade which is then in turn waxed. This alternating waxing and dyeing is repeated until the desired effect is achieved, with the darkest color being last. The hardened wax may crack leaving a way for dye to absorb into the fabric, giving it a veined look which is indicative of batik. The wax is then removed.
Meagan McCrory has been creating batik art for over 15 years. Meagan launched Double Take Studio, a successful and growing art studio in the Village of Springville, in the fall of 2006. Meagan will present a workshop October 2, 9, & 16 where participants can make their own batik piece. Call 592-9038 to register.
