Calling all artists, craftspeople and people who like to PLAY~
We are thrilled to be a winner of Kaboom!’s “Play Everywhere Design Challenge”
The Play Everywhere Design Challenge is a program run by KABOOM! and supported by the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation that invites communities like ours to submit creative ideas for public installations that help make play more accessible to families. These projects infuse play into everyday locations like bus stops and laundromats, giving kids in our community opportunities to get the physical activity and social interaction they need to thrive.
The future site of the Arts Mini-Park is a 10 by 100 foot shaded space positioned between the arts center building and Franklin Street – a busy thoroughfare in proximity to schools, community spaces, churches, and preschools. The Arts Mini-Park will utilize a meandering path that will encourage passersby to veer off the sidewalk.
Our goal is to incorporate discoverable play and art elements targeting preschoolers through third-graders and accompany them with features or amenities for older children or adults to encourage people to pause for a moment on their way to the town hall or to get ice cream at the Dairy. The specific elements will include large scale chimes, slate pieces that can be painted on with water or chalk, hiding spaces and more. We will complete our design with community input and the assistance of a designer Joy Kuebler Landscape Architect, PC.
We are looking for volunteers to help in all aspects of the project: planning, installing and creating the unique pieces that will become our Arts Mini-Park.
- Arts Mini-Park Committee: Planning and choosing the interactive play elements, proposing the final design
- Junior Designers: Elementary Aged students who will brainstorm and give input for the design
- Artisans and Craftspeople: Metalsmiths, welders, woodworkers, masons, and gardeners to create the play elements.
