An exhibit featuring local artist Melissa Buckley, who creates both layered two dimensional and sculptural art out of vintage objects. After spending 2 years at RIT, Melissa graduated from Buffalo State College with a Fine Arts degree in Textile Design. She has taught freshman and adult Fiber classes at UB, shown locally in galleries in both solo and group shows, and won several awards for her mixed media work. Her work has been published in print and in online ezine publications. And just recently, three of her assemblage pieces were selected to be props in the locally filmed movie, The True Adventures of Wolfboy. She is currently a member of the Roycroft Campus Arts & Craftsmen Guild, with plans to become a juried member of the Guild with her handwoven textiles in the spring of 2022. In the fall of 2020, Melissa opened the Rusty Button Shop in East Aurora, NY as a place for local artists to sell their work during the pandemic and beyond.

Melissa’s mixed media collage and assemblage work is influenced by some of the greats – Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns and Joseph Cornell, as well as by a few contemporaries – Crystal Neubauer, Alicia Caudle and Colleen Monette.

ARTIST STATEMENT:

There is beauty in the weathered, rusted, decayed, broken and imperfect. The Japanese have a word for this. It is wabi-sabi. In an effort to capture the essence of the detritus, I create my artwork using primarily found objects and discarded or damaged antique and vintage items. My process is intuitive, allowing the piece itself to lead the way.  At times the object is the inspiration for the work. At other times, it might be a story I want to tell. My assemblage and collage work serves to honor the objects with a past by keeping their story alive, while at the same time, giving them a new one to carry into the future.
