Springville Players Present Proof

Auditions March 14 & 15

The Springville Players are holding auditions for Proof by David Auburn on March 14 and 14 at 7PM. Directed by Tom Durham, a 50-year veteran of local theater, the production takes place at Springville Center for the Arts May 12-22, 2016.

Proof premiered on Broadway in 2000. In the story, Catherine, a troubled young woman, has spent years caring for her brilliant but unstable father, a famous mathematician. Now, following his death, she must deal with the arrival of her estranged sister, Claire; and the attentions of Hal, a former student of her father’s who hopes to find valuable work in the notebooks that her father left behind. Over the long weekend that follows, a burgeoning romance and the discovery of a mysterious notebook draw Catherine into the most difficult problem of all: How much of her father’s madness—or genius—will she inherit? The play received national attention, earning the Drama Desk Award, the Pulitzer Prize, and the Tony Award for Best Play. The script was later made into a film starring Gwyneth Paltrow

The cast includes Catherine, 25, Robert, 28, Hal, in his fifties, and Claire, 29. Scripts and details are available by calling the Center at 716-592-9038. Auditions will be held in the Mongerson Theater, Springville Center for the Arts, 37 N Buffalo Street, Springville.

PROOF — CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS

Catherine:            extremely bright, especially in math; insecure; funny, but sometimes too acerbic; quirky; caring; lacking social graces; awkward; worried that she will inherit her father’s mental  instability and “craziness”; difficult with relationships,  especially with her sister (Catherine works with theoretical math.)

Claire:                        Catherine’s sister; bright, but not as bright as her sister; possibly fearful of her sister’s intelligence; practical;  able to care from a distance, but unable to deal with the daily, hands-on job of care-giving; more comfortable when matters are under her neat and tidy control; cares very much in her own way (Claire works with practical math.)

Robert:            Catherine’s father; brilliant mathematician; not one to “suffer fools gladly”; demanding; self-absorbed; unconscious of his own social failings; proud of Claire’s success; loves and respects Catherine in his own way

Hal:   former student of Robert’s; geeky math nerd; somewhat (but not completely) socially inept; blundering; sometimes  clueless; worshipful of Robert’s work; bright but not as bright as Catherine; develops a genuine fondness for Catherine; unconsciously may not believe women can be brilliant in math
