Oil Painting “Our Favorite Places”
with Charles Houseman
Thursdays, March 29, April 5, 12, 19, 26, 6 – 8 pm
These workshops will take you from start to finish on creating a landscape painting with oil paints. Open to all skill levels, participants will work from their own photos of their “favorite places”. Charles Houseman, a retired art teacher at SGI and accomplished artist will cover composition, painting surfaces, paint and brush options, and more.
Houseman is a retired art teacher at SGI, and has exhibited work in regional and national exhibitions. Formerly president of the Buffalo Society of Artists, his work is represented by Meibohm Fine Arts in East Aurora and Oxford Gallery in Rochester.
Experience: beginner to advanced
In this painting class, we’ll cover composition, painting surfaces, paint and brush options, along with steps from start to finish, along with glazes and varnishing. Focus will be on landscape painting of “favorite places”, local spots, or even places you’d like to visit. Class participants should gather photos, and sketches if possible for reference materials.
What to expect:
The first session members should bring work in progress, or a couple recent pieces to discuss. Video presentation will be viewed on artists and their impact on National Parks, along with basics of composition. The remaining classes will involve setting up compositions, starting to block in paint, and developing details, along with adjusting values and focus.
Materials:
1-2 small (8 x 10”- 14 x 18”) canvasses, basic set of oil paints, palette, a few size brushes, medium, painting knife. (These will be reviewed during the first class). Also reference materials: photos and sketches, and a portable easel if available.
