Springville Center for the Arts is seeking artists for performing and visual arts residency programs.
Springville Center for the Arts is a rural multi-arts center located in Western New York State. Our main facility is an 1869 former church which houses a theater, the Olmsted Gallery and workspaces. We recently launched Art’s Cafe, an AIA-award winning redevelopment of a dilapidated building into a small performance space, workshop, artist housing and publicly accessible green roof centered around a bakery-cafe.
Every residency is different, some artists need only quiet space to work and others benefit from a series of community engagements over a longer time period. We will consider a full range of applications; however, the most competitive candidates will include a blend of community engagement and artistic development, for a duration or multiple visits which provide the time needed for substantial artistic and community growth.
Performing arts example:
The Ladles sing tight three part harmony. During a three week program in 2020, the trio shared songs, perfected arrangements through a series of back-yard and farm concerts, and then spent the last week recording material in the sanctuary / theater space. Fans and bandmembers collaborated on printing linocut custom album covers. The material was later released as The Springville Sessions and the group returned in 2021 to shoot promotional video.
Visual arts example:
Bryan Metzdorf is an artist and commercial designer who has conceived and executed immersive, experimental retail and commercial spaces for brands across the country. As part of a collaboration with the Albright-Knox’s Public Art Initiative, during a three week program in October 2020, Metzdorf created several studies and finished works that were on view at Art’s Cafe and created a public mural. Metzdorf designed the mural, titled Before and Not Yet, on-site, borrowing from the existing architectural language and colors of Main Street in Springville. He also engaged artistically with local students in grades K–12 through SCA and Springville High School. Read more about his residency here.
Playwriting:
SCA is seeking to commission a playwright to create a script for a program touring the summer of 2024. Artsapalooza is a free, outdoor, multi-arts program for families with younger children. The two-hour program brings interactive art-making stations, a chance to explore drums and ukulele, theater games and more to rural audiences, culminating in a performance that incorporates giant puppets and live music. The commission requires writing a 40-minute performance piece for children and their families that includes audience interaction, use of live music and song, and the incorporation of large scale, multi-operator puppets. The piece should lead to highly engaging visuals and the playwright need not avoid pathos, horror, or challenging subject matter as long as it engages young audiences. We are not interested in saccharine retellings of cute fairy tales.
