The Threepenny Opera    |    July 28 – August 7
A High School and College Student Musical Production at Springville Center for the Arts
Amidst the coronation of Queen Victoria, the undesirable, hidden part of society – the lowlifes of London, scheme, love and betray each other in this “opera for beggars” from composer Kurt Weill and playwright Bertolt Brecht. Peachum, ruler of the beggars, sentences Macheath (Mack the Knife) to hang after marrying his daughter without permission. One of Macheath’s frequent acquaintances at the brothel gives him up to the police for a small sum. Will Mack’s cunning, his crew of thieves, or the Queen herself save this man?  Designed as a satirization of traditional opera and staged more as a typical musical, Threepenny first opened amidst the crushing economic conditions of The Weimar Republic in Germany but still jabs at contemporary times with comments about the thievery of high finance and those left behind in the “post-recession” economy.
The cast includes high school and college students Zackary Martin, Rachel Moses, Melyssa Prouty, Emily Barger, Gavin Hurley, Corrinne Greene, Grant Cleaveland, Sarah Guadagna, Kimberly Pukay, Lily Katz, Jack Lillin, Tyler Brennen, Victoria Ehrig, Chrissy Lillis, Amanda Maybray, Gillian Gurganus, Rhyannon Davis and is directed by Han Taub.
Performances take place at the Mongerson Theater at Springville Center for the Arts at 37 N Buffalo Street on July 28, 29, 30 & August 5, 6 at 8pm and July 31 & August 7 at 2pm. Tickets are available online at SpringvilleArts.org or by calling the Center at 716-592-9038 for $15 or $12 students and seniors.  The show contains innuendo about mature themes and the narrative centers around prostitutes, beggars and crooked policemen.
From L to R: Zack Martin as Mr. Peachum, Emily Barger as Polly Peachum, Rachel Moses as Mrs. Peachum, Kimberly Pukay as Lucy Brown and Grant Cleaveland as Tiger Brown.
