Songwriter Showcase – March 4

Saturday, March 4, 2017 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Four musicians share the story behind their songs.

Nelson Starr came to the attention of WNYers with the grungy, progressive leaning rock group, the Tails, in the early 90’s. Concurrently, he worked the area as a jazz pianist, private lesson instructor, and all around musician’s musician. After an all-too-hasty Tails breakup, Starr refocused on composition, production and earning a living with music. With a short stint touring as bassist for the 10,000 Maniacs, doing recording sessions and gigs in NYC with up-and-coming indies, and compositions for film and TV, Starr forged new ground within and beyond the rock world. This culminated in jazz performances at Lincoln Center, scores for national TV shows, rock tours throughout Canada and the US and induction into the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame in 2006.

More recently, Starr has pursued “working hobbies” in the food world: as regular judge at Nickel City Chef, Taste of Buffalo and other culinary events. His featured appearances on Anthony Bourdain – No Reservations have earned him new fans worldwide. Starr’s subsequent forays into food TV and other culture and lifestyle media – with even a detour into politics — have made him an in-demand host, interviewee, writer and activist in the Buffalo scene.

Currently, Starr, when he is not gigging as “Paul” in Beatlemagic (yet another of his passions – the Beatles) or performing various rock or jazz gigs, can be seen hosting Buffalo For Real TV, where he investigates the unique, the classical, the entrepreneurial, and the all-too-honest or just plain weird treasures that Buffalo has to offer. With Nelson Starr, the only thing for sure is: stay tuned for more!   http://www.nelsonstarr.com/

Grace Stumberg is a singer/songwriter based out of Buffalo, New York. Stumberg’s style can be described as indie folk with a very percussive style of guitar playing. Her voice transcends spirit and holds both power in range as well as an effortless dynamic of soul. Grace also serves as backup singer for folk legend Joan Baez and has traveled the world sharing the stage with artists such as the Indigo Girls, Robert Plant, Josh Ritter, and more. She has been mentioned in the Rolling Stone Magazine recognizing her performance at the Beacon Theatre for Ms Baez’s 75th birthday party. She continues to travel with Ms Baez while performing in her home town of Buffalo, NY frequently.  http://www.gracestumberg.com/

Chris Squier‘s music is a lot like your favorite pair of old jeans: Beat-up, torn, and perfectly lived-in. His songs, a warm blend of early Rod Stewart with tinges of CSNY, Folk and Americana, appeal to those who’ve lived a bit and could share a few stories. If that sounds like you, then you’ve come to the right place. Pull up a bar stool and stick around – first round’s on the way. Chris performs both locally and nationally and has opened for artists such as Jakob Dylan (Wallflowers), Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, and Brett Michaels .His latest EP “Flowers Beneath the Ashes” is currently in rotation in 30 radio stations across the US and Europe. Chris currently resides in Buffalo, NY where he has been honored with multiple nominations for local and regional music awards.    http://www.chrissquier.com/

Infectious, well done but still tender, songs–stuffed to the gills with vintage riffage–are emblematic of Nick Kody’s brand of deep-fried, American rock and roll goodness! Kody has an unmistakable affinity and abundant natural gifts for all things blues and real-deal classic rock that you’d swear he’s thrice his age. Yet, Kody somehow manages to conjure up fresh perspective and renewed vitality to the tried and true–fueled in large measure by his equally tuneful as soulful vocals and smooth, late-sixties guitar delivery. That geezers and hipsters alike will be singing along with catchy-a** chorus after catchy-a** chorus is a good thing. If you were fed the likes of Lynyrd Skynyrd and CCR as a child, you’ll be wanting a ‘nother few rounds of what Nick Kody is proudly serving! Check him out live and on upcoming releases! Nick Kody has opened for Brett Michaels, Eric Church, Stolen Rhodes & Heather Luttrell. He currently tours the country both with his full band (the Creek Road Band) or solo acoustic. He frequently performs across New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Ohio, and Texas. Kody’s latest record “The Sonic Farm Sessions” (self-produced with help from Nelson Starr) was recorded in Colden NY at Sonic Farm Studio and released in the fall of 2016.   http://www.nickkody.com/
