Gowanda-based artist Thomas Militello has been avidly exploring glasswork since 2009. His interest in the craft piqued when he first began collecting vintage marbles. From there, his fascination grew and he made an effort to meet contemporary marble artists; in doing so, he learned more about the process that went into creating glass art. Watching other artists work inspired him to pursue a craft that Militello describes as “fun.” He has studied under John Kabuki, Hugh Salkind, Jeremiah Kern, Suellen Fowler and Cameron Tower at The Studio at the Corning Museum of Glass. West Virginia marble artists Sammy Hogue and Eddie Seese provided early fundamental training and inspiration. A retired Corrections Sergeant with the NYS Department of Corrections, Militello is also an avid gardener, photographer, fisherman, hunter, kayaker and amateur astronomer. A frequent kayaker, he often uses driftwood as part of his displays. He served as a member of the Cattaraugus County Arts Council (now Tri-County Arts Council) in 2011. He recently traveled to West Virginia to showcase his work and perform demonstrations of furnace marbles at the Sistersville Marble Festival. His favorite pieces to craft are often nature-inspired and he seeks to capture the shapes of living forms suspended within the glass.
