Social Justice Stitched Stories by Stitch Buffalo

Wednesday, May 18, 2022 - Saturday, July 2, 2022 All Day

An exhibition of unique work by Stitch Buffalo is on display at Art’s Cafe from May 18 – July 2.

The centerpiece is their “Power of Peace” installation, a wall-sized peace sign assembled entirely from smaller hand-embroidered peace signs created by artists from Stitch Buffalo’s Refugee Women’s Workshop. These include: Diga Biswa, Damberi Amber, Paw Eh Bu, Ni Ni Sui, Tika, Lung, Zi Ram, Mondari Mager, Ser Eh Paw, Deo Kami, Hem Tamang, Kausila Yamuna, Saraswati Twari, Bawk Mi, Hkoung Lung, Hin Si, Tila Bastola, Sarasawati Dhaki, Ei Zar, Mu Mu, Sila Mager, Dah John, Nin Hta Mai, Sarita Biswa, Phul Biswa, Sally Bhandari, and Wah Say. Each component was designed at the complete discretion of the individual artist, using her unique selection of colors, stitches, and design elements to reflect her personal aesthetic and cultural traditions. This collaborative textile-art work renders the peace symbol as a powerful message about the beauty of celebrating our individual differences while striving toward harmony for all.

Supporting the “Power of Peace,” is a collection of up to forty works from their “Social Justice Stitched Stories” program, which took place over the course of 2021. This program engaged local students and community members with Stitch Buffalo’s refugee women artists, staff, and volunteers along with local students and activists in a collaborative textile arts project. In a process facilitated by diversity and inclusion professionals, they examined the wide range of social justice issues that had been personally encountered by the participants and created “stitched stories” reflecting those lived experiences. The issues covered include racism and xenophobia, food access, income and education inequality, physical and mental healthcare access, immigration, ableism, working conditions, and much more.
