GYOTAKU: JAPANESE FISH PRINTS

Gyotaku is the traditional Japanese method of printing fish, used by fishermen to record their catches. In this class, we will use latex molds of a variety of sea creatures and plants as our printing plates. With Janet Vedder.

HEART | THE HEART AS A GARDEN | SUMINAGASHI & UNSTRUCK SOUND

This class will focus on “I Love,” the Heart Chakra, associated with our capacity to love, the seat of our compassion and connection, and transcendence of fear, also referred to as the gateway to our inner gardens. You will use traditional Suminagashi marbling and Ebru paint techniques to work through a comparison contemplation of grayscale and the traditional Heart Chakra color of green to create our own complex gardens.

Musical Theater Dance Class

Song Circle

Bring a song you have written or are working on. Share with others. With the hopes of continuing to build a community of songwriters, Caleb Spaulding and Jon Hasz will host this monthly get-together. The group will meet in the basement workshop in January, February, and March.See the progress as they share their work in the dining space on April 17th.

PAINTING EXERCISES

This three-part painting workshop will set the groundwork for better paintings over time. Geared for intermediate students, the focus will be the planning and design steps that result in more masterful paintings. The lessons will emphasize where and how you put paint down, shapes used, values arranged, and colors selected. The aim will not be on a single wonderful painting but rather smaller size paintings that allow for easy corrections. Participants will select their own media and subject matter to work with. This hike is a guided wilderness bushwhack through some of Allegany’s mostly unknown and seldom visited old growth forests, a couple of which are among the largest remaining intact ancient forests in the Northeast. Amble through enchanting landscapes where you’ll see some of the largest and tallest trees in the region, picturesque mossy-bouldered creeks featuring many small waterfalls, intriguing root formations and much more. These areas are unique and wondrous, a world left to it’s own devices, largely unaltered by man.

THROAT | BLOOMING VOICE | DECONSTRUCTED WEAVING & INDIGO DYEING

In this class, we’ll focus on “I Speak,” the Throat Chakra, associated with our authenticity and ability to speak and express ourselves clearly and truthfully. It’s associated with the color blue, so we’re going to weave our own intuitive sound waves and distress them with a dip in the indigo vat.
