Multifaceted artist and WNY native Robert John Holland (1945-2022 wrote, “I embrace a philosophy of living in a direct relationship with nature and assimilating and encoding the natural life cycle into the creative process. My personal and artistic ambition is to bring viewers into that relationship so that they can become part of this unique connection and share this opportunity to preserve the environment that feeds and nourishes us for the better.” Holland was an aquatic horticulturist, preservationist, and environmental activist. He also studied Seneca traditions on the Cattaraugus Territory with Twylah Hurd Nitsch, an elder in the Wolf Clan Teaching Lodge, which greatly influenced his art.
