JOE WARD: FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION

Joe Ward is a self-taught artist from Holland, NY. Learning
from books, galleries, and other artists, he has channeled this
knowledge into his oil-painted landscapes. Ward says about this
exhibition, “A fellow artist once told me that ‘an artist has to pay
his dues.’ This would imply a sort of obligatory interdependence
among artists. While I agree that one should be influenced by other artists, I think that this influence should not interfere too much with an artist’s individuality. As a consequence, I have shielded myself from attempts to limit the freedom with which I paint. Yet, I think that I have retained respect for what other artists have achieved. I have been striving to establish a balance between the fundamentals of technique and their use in creating a personal statement.”
