The Wiyos

Saturday, April 27, 2013 8:00 pm

Formed in New York City during the summer of 2002, The Wiyos took their name from the toughest gang to prowl the streets of old New York (The Why’os, circa 1890). They have spent eight years touring extensively in the USA, Canada, France, The Netherlands and The United Kingdom. They were featured in the BBC television documentary, “Folk America – Hollerers, Stompers and Old-Time Ramblers”. In 2009 The Wiyos were hand picked by Bob Dylan to tour for seven weeks as the opener of the Bob Dylan Show, with Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp. Their 2009 release, Broken Land Bell, sat in the top 20 of the AMA charts for 14 weeks. The Wiyos unique charisma transcends typical social boundaries. They appeal to everyone from young hipsters to seasoned music connoisseurs. They have emerged as a hallmark band in the resurgence of traditional American music over the past decade.

They will perform one very special night in Springville on April 27th at 8pm. Tickets are on sale now for $12 presale and $15 at the door. A workshop will precede the performance at 4pm. Call 592-9038 to register.

“..a modern band whose vintage reference points include Tin Pan Alley pop and Spike Jones. ..the young Brooklyn trio created a set of revelatory original songs inspired by The Wizard of Oz.” –Chicago Tribune, 2010

“The song structures develop into snaky, devious journeys. Simultaneously tear-jerking and disturbing, this new material invokes McCartney at his most melancholy, Lennon at his most acid-inflected, and Oz in all of its most surreal, Technicolour glory.” –Backroadsmusic.co.uk, 2011

“The set of songs which followed all concerned the mystical magical world of Oz. The audience was genuinely spellbound. Even seasoned Wiyos fans were experiencing brand new, highly original material.” –Maverick Magazine, UK, 2011

“fabulously skilled and inspired” –LA Times

“The group brings exuberance and intensity to these vintage styles” –The New Yorker
