Following two intertwining love stories – that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of immortal King Hades and Lady Persephone – Hadestown invites audiences on a hell-raising journey to the underworld and back.

The White Liars depicts a fateful encounter between a down-and-out fortune teller, a rock musician, and his agent. The agent bribes Baroness Lemberg to fake some hocus-pocus over a crystal ball, ostensibly to discourage the musician from pursuing his girlfriend. The trickery entangles each of them in a dense web of mendacity.

Join us in singing simple folk songs, mantras, and rounds. Stimulate relaxation, activate the vagus nerve, and connect with yourself and your community.

Gyotaku is the traditional Japanese method of printing fish, a practice that dates back to the mid-1800’s, used by fishermen to record their catches. We will use latex molds of sea creatures and plants as our printing plates – not real fish!

The NY and CA Chapters of VIEW FINDERS, directed and curated by Bonita Chimes, will be presenting their photographic interpretation of “Fundamental Sensations of the Eye.” Photographs are creatively taken in three basic colors; Red, Yellow or Blue. All photographs have been taken as viewed “through the lens” and have not been digitally manipulated. VIEW FINDERS, established in 1994, has been an on-going adventurous group of amateur and professional photographers throughout WNY and in Northern CA.

Based on Sholom Aleichem’s Tevye and his Daughters, Fiddler on the Roof is the beloved story of the small, tradition-steeped town of Anatevka, Russia, where Jews and Russians live in delicate balance. It is a story that captures the essential human longings for love, community, success, freedom, family, and meaning.

Cantrip Jam Session

December 13th | 6:30pm | Art’s Cafe

There will be an open community jam session on Friday, December 13th with Scottish band Cantrip. Any skill level is welcome to bring their voices or instruments and participate in an open jam with the band.

Traditional Scottish band Cantrip will give a free performance for families Saturday morning at the Cafe.

Swirling border pipes, raging fiddle, thunderous guitar and three rich voices blend to create a sound energetic enough to tear the roof off. Echoes can be heard of trad music from the 1960s and 70s, but the years have slowly infested their music with the sounds of funk, metal, bluegrass, swing, and even klezmer.

We will explore the sacral chakra through a contemplation of its associated color of orange, using color mixing exercises with oil paint, found object assemblage and mixed media.

Alan Nowicki, Director of Programming at the National Historic Landmark, Roycroft Campus will give a presentation on the Art’s & Crafts movement and the history of the Roycroft. A panel of local artisans will then talk about their crafts.

Two by Two Auditions on Saturday, April 15th at Arts Underground.

In this workshop, collage a character into existence with historical found photographs, build their personality and story through short prompts, then construct a fictional album. You’ll walk away with an object that is part art, part story—a narrative in disguise.

In this workshop participants will produce a memorial artwork using a woodblock and a photograph that captures the life or memory of a loved one, a pet, or a special place.

Noah was writing the chapters of Genesis when suddenly God spoke to him: There will be a world-destroying flood, and Noah must build an ark to house two of every kind of animal. So begins the story of Two by Two, a musical retelling of the biblical story of the Great Flood.

Join Janet Vedder, an artist-in-residence on the Roycroft Campus, for an introduction to a beautiful art style. The class includes history, philosophy, and specific brush strokes to create an artwork.

A creativity program for 2-5 year olds that meet on Fridays at Arts Underground.

Participants will choose their unique view to paint en plein air at the beautiful Olmsted Camp.

Inspired by a still life provided by the instructor, participants will mix water and transparent watercolor pigments to create fluid washes with a focus on layering clean transparent color for a luminous painting.

Shibori is a Japanese manual dyeing technique used on textiles to create patterns that spread unevenly across the fabric. The resulting patterns are often emblematic of Japan’s appreciation of the beauty of imperfection – known locally as wabi sabi.

Participants will use a dampened paper to mix transparent watercolor pigments while learning control of fluid washes and wet into wet techniques.

Presented by SCA and Students Loving Art and Music (SLAM). The show centers on a fictional spelling bee set in a geographically ambiguous Putnam Valley Middle School. Six quirky adolescents compete in the Bee, run by three equally quirky grown-ups.

Baltimore-based band The Honey Dewdrops continue to expand their experimental folk sound while maintaining a commitment to deepening their understanding of the world through the lens of music.

An end-of-summer street party including a mural unveiling by Miss Birdy, live music, food trucks, a kid’s Art Reception at The Lab, and a Lil’ SLAM performance of The Phantom Tollbooth Jr.

Students who participated in the All-Out-Arts summer program will put on a production of The Phantom Tollbooth Jr.

To make a batik, selected areas of the design are blocked out by applying hot wax over them, a dye is applied on top and the parts covered in wax resist the dye and remain the original colour.

Shasti O’Leary Soudant is a multidisciplinary artist, sculptor, designer and writer whose colorful public art is inspired by humanist, philosophical, political, and scientific concepts. These events are a great way for both artists and those interested in the arts to network, learn about events and opportunities, and hear more about all the exciting art-making happening in Western New York! 

A creativity program for children aged 2-5 years modeled after the Reggio Emilia approach. Activities include painting, dance, theatrical storytelling, story making, acting out scenes, and general art-making mayhem. 

Each photograph is unique in its characteristics, portraying different degrees of light and shadow, various color schemes, seasonal vegetation, and assorted angles and views of the trees and foliage. Some photos show the trees individually or in groups, while others are close-ups of leaves, blossoms, and berries. The trees themselves seem ageless and eternal, growing and changing season after season, as the cycle of days pass and begin again.

Fundamental drawing experience using a charcoal midtone, followed by development of shadow and highlight shapes to create the form, with charcoal manipulation and line quality enhancing the shapes.

Kool-aid isn’t just for kids! Use it as a dye to design your own beautiful silk scarf.

Participants will choose their unique view to paint en plein air and receive guidance on simplifying the landscape, value structure, composition, and focal point. All mediums are welcome.

Rachel Shelton centers an experimental and process-based practice around printmaking, expanding into book arts, enamel, public art, and sculpture. This workshop is designed to hone your inner photography skills by slowing down, observing and seeing the beauty of nature, water, the atmosphere, and manmade objects.

Experiment with monotype techniques that you can replicate at home. From trace monotypes to Gelli plate prints, you can play with stencils, hand drawing, and color layering to create unique, original prints on paper.

The show depicts a hilarious view into the lives of siblings Minerva and Maximus as they sift through the personal artifacts and trappings of their recently deceased father.

When you Learn to Weave, you will be able to create textiles, wall hangings, tapestries, rugs, baskets, and jewelry.  In this class you will learn about the materials and supplies, how to begin a weaving, and how to create a variety of weaving patterns.

MJ Meyers is a prolific artist from Buffalo, NY focusing on drawing and painting. These events are a great way for both artists and those interested in the arts to network, learn about events and opportunities, and hear more about all the exciting art-making happening in Western New York! 

Suminagashi or “floating ink” is the process of marbling plain paper using water and ink. Create your own unique marbled paper to use in a future project.

 VIEW FINDERS is known for exhibiting work taken “through the lens” that has not been digitally manipulated. The theme A Taste of Tradition focuses on capturing vintage, food-related moments.

Bethany Krull is a sculptor based in Buffalo, New York working in clay (primarily porcelain) for over twenty years. Learn how to take better portraits using your favorite camera: your phone! In this workshop, we’ll learn some helpful compositional tips, take pictures, print them out, and wheat paste them to blocks of wood.

The Human Dream Project is a multimedia performance project that takes recordings of humans intimately describing a dream they have had and illustrates their dreams along to the recording using beautiful and irreverent puppetry, performance and live music.

Come write with us! This workshop will focus on starting a short story. Through writing prompts and activities, attendees will leave the class with at least the beginning of a short story written.

Learn to punch needle as we create a holiday-inspired artwork! Punch needle art is a super simple form of embroidery / rug-hooking which uses a large needle-like tool to punch loops of yarn into your chosen fabric.

QUINCY KOCZKA

Quincy Koczka is a designer, builder, skateboarder, and artist based in Buffalo, NY. He has a masters of architecture from the University at Buffalo and was the lead trainer, as well as lead builder for Assembly House 150 in Buffalo, NY. He currently is part of the newly formed 1338 Workshop which is an interdisciplinary collection of artists, designers, and tradespeople working in the realms of art, decorative art, and architecture.

Learn a tune on the ukulele with Seth Wochensky at Uke Night. Musicians of all experience levels are welcome and encouraged to attend. Extra ukes will be provided, or bring your own.

At a Silent Book Club there’s no assigned reading or discussion guides—that’s the “silent” part of our book club—but we do like to share book recommendations and meet other book-loving people.

Calling local artists! Springville Center for the Arts is seeking work for Community Threads. This exhibit will showcase a variety of fiber arts from our region.

Formed in 2016, Smilo and the Ghost have been delivering hard-driving, old-time influenced folk-rock to crowds around the Northeast.

Participants will produce a memorial artwork with a photograph and assorted dry media materials, which will be applied to a woodblock for presentation.

SCA Executive Director Seth Wochensky will moderate a conversation with a panel of artists from the Founders Show. The show and panel consists of some of the original gallery members and influential artists of SCA’s early days.

Penny Minner, a member of the Seneca Nation, Turtle Clan, will give a brief history of traditional weaving. Students will learn how to weave an ornament using sweetgrass.

Springville Center for the Arts seeks to add a full-time Performing Arts Director to our team who will manage music performances, coordinate our theater program, work with interns and guest artists during our summer youth programs, and help to craft special events or touring programs.

DUTIES

Performing Arts Presentations: Provide artistic direction, technical support, event management, and marketing related to concerts at our venues.

Theater Programs: Work with Theater Committee volunteers to produce a season of shows. Manage theater spaces and other assets such as props, costumes, or tools.

Summer Youth Programs: Select and manage summer interns and guest artists to participate in youth workshops and performing arts productions.

Special Events: Produce performing arts content at special events such as Art Crawl, Bootleg Soiree, or the Artsapalooza touring show.

General Administrative duties that are shared include staffing box office hours, researching funding, work on sponsorships and creating reports.

Candidates may come from a broad variety of backgrounds and those most likely to succeed have a long-term interest in the arts, experience in a nonprofit working environment, and/or event management. SCA has a small team and this position requires a person who is a self-starter and able to work with many different types of volunteers. They should have the ability to multi-task and adjust to seasonal or event-related fluctuations in workload. The position requires attendance at many weekend and evening programs. Long distance travel or working from home won’t lead to success. Learning is expected.

Springville Center for the Arts (SCA) is a catalyst for creative inspiration and expression in our community and beyond. Kody & Herren will be performing a special set of Christmas songs at Art’s Cafe in Springville, NY on Christmas Eve. Stop in during your last minute shopping, grab some lunch and coffee at the Cafe, and enjoy listening to a mix of Christmas classics and holiday deep tracks.

This workshop is for anyone who is interested in learning the Spanish language or improving their Spanish conversation skills.
